Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a procedure that uses your body’s own natural growth factors to stimulate new collagen in the skin and hair growth. Platelets, a natural part of your blood, are vehicles for healing because they contain growth-promoting substances. When an injury occurs, the platelets activate and release these growth factors to heal the wound. Additionally, platelets stimulate tissue recovery and hair follicle growth.

What areas can be treated with PRP?
At Cenla Dermatology and Mohs Surgery, PRP is used for restoring hair growth and improving skin elasticity and firmness for a healthier and more vibrant appearance. If injected into the skin, the activated platelets stimulate skin rejuvenation in and around the injection sites. If injected into the scalp, the activated platelets stimulate new hair growth in those areas of the scalp.
For hair loss, the PRP is injected into your scalp with a small needle to restore blood flow to hair follicles and promote new hair growth. PRP can also be injected into eyebrows to stimulate hair growth. The growth factors help to create or stimulate new hair follicles. PRP injections are an effective and safe addition to most hair loss treatment plans. The providers at Cenla Dermatology and Mohs Surgery will discuss the possible use of PRP as an additive treatment for hair loss at your appointment.
PRP can also be used as injectable facial filler to refresh skin. This is a low-risk treatment for that hard-to-treat under eye area and is a great add-on to other skin procedures. Additionally, microneedling followed by application of PRP has been shown to have an increase in multiple types of collagen. This treatment became popular several years ago and is known as the “vampire facial.” The increase in collagen makes skin more refreshed and has been shown to decrease the appearance of acne, fine lines, wrinkles, or pigmented areas.
