Cenla Dermatology providers are experts at treating acne. Many patients seek treatment for acne, but also wonder how to get rid of their acne scars. The first step to treating acne scars is to clear up existing acne. It is important to be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist because sometimes patients think their acne is controlled but there is still subtle (hard to see) acne that is still present. It is more efficient and cost effective to ensure your acne is clear before treating acne scars. We don’t want to be treating scars if you still have acne and are making new scars!
At Cenla Dermatology, we offer a combination of topical medications, oral medications, cleansers, peels or lasers to treat your acne. Once your acne is clear and controlled, it’s time to move on to treating acne scars.

Acne scars appear in many different ways:
How do you prevent acne scars?
It is important to visit Cenla Dermatology as early as possible when treating your acne, especially if you notice any scarring. You should do your best not to pick your acne, as this tends to make acne and scarring worse. We know it is very difficult, but it is very important to not squeeze acne! Fiddling with or picking an acne pimple generally makes it last longer and makes it way more likely to leave a scar.
How do we treat acne scars?
The most important, first simple step is a DAILY facial sunscreen. This will keep the scars as close to your normal skin tone as possible. We have several sunscreen favorites at Cenla Dermatology. We choose sunscreens that will not worsen acne and that are customized to your skin type. We even offer sunscreens that can brighten skin at the same time! Sunscreen will keep dark scars from getting more dark, and also keep pink scars from becoming more red. Daily facial sunscreen often gently moisturizes the skin to better prepare it for acne or scar treatments. If you are not wearing a DAILY sunscreen it is unlikely that any treatment for acne scars will work.
A prescription strength topical retinoid can improve acne scars. Early treatment with topical retinoids can increase collagen formation and build new healthy skin in and around acne scars.
What sort of procedures does Cenla Dermatology offer to improve acne scarring?
Providers at Cenla Dermatology select medical grade skincare and prescriptions tailored to each patient. We offer MANY safe and effective procedures to improve acne scarring such as laser treatments, TCA cross, chemical peels, microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling. Each patient skin type and acne scar type must be taken into consideration when selecting treatments.
Treating acne scarring requires a commitment and a dedication to sun protection. We can help but it doesn’t happen overnight! Usually, a series of procedures is necessary, and periodic maintenance treatments are recommended. Strict sun protection and habitual skincare is critical to controlling acne and acne scarring. Our team will carefully select customized treatments to efficiently and effectively reduce acne and acne scarring.
