Laser Hair Removal

Cenla Dermatology offers the most up-to-date laser technology for removing unwanted hair in all skin types. Laser hair removal reduces the bumps and irritation produced by older hair removal methods like shaving, plucking, and waxing, helping you reveal permanently smooth, unblemished skin. Undergoing laser hair removal also reduces the hassle and time spent grooming, so you can focus your time and energy on more important matters.

At Cenla Dermatology, we offer two state-of-the-art laser devices to ensure we deliver safe and effective laser hair treatments for your individualized needs. Both of these devices reduce unwanted hair, treat skin irritation from shaving, and prevent shaving bumps. Cenla Dermatology offers laser hair removal with the Broad Band Light (BBL) laser, a powerful light-based laser, and the precise Excel HR laser. Both of these devices selectively target and destroy the pigment in the hair follicle while protecting the surrounding skin tissue. Our team of board certified dermatologists direct all of our laser treatments and can help you decide which treatment is right for you.

Who is laser hair removal for?

Both men and women of all skin types are candidates for laser hair removal. For some patients, the goal of laser hair removal is complete, permanent hair reduction. However, other patients elect to have a few laser hair treatments to eradicate painful shaving bumps or razor bumps. The bumps and pigmentation that occur with shaving and waxing can improve in as little as one treatment with laser hair removal!

What areas of the body can be treated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can be performed on all body areas with the right patient selection. Before the full laser hair treatment area is treated, we may suggest treating a small spot in the treatment area to ensure optimal results from the procedure. Body areas eligible for laser hair removal treatment include the face (unibrow, upper lip, chin, jawline), neck, underarms, abdomen, back, legs, bikini, breasts, and buttocks. Hair removal lasers use the dark color in hair follicles as the target for hair removal; therefore, these hair removal lasers will not work on light, white, or gray hairs.

How many treatments are required?

Hairs grow in different cycles, so the laser treatments must be done in several sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart in order to target all of the hairs in a treatment area. To get the most value and the safest treatment, you will have a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists prior to treatment. Generally, there is a decrease of 60-90% of hairs after 6-8 treatments. Laser hair treatment is considered a permanent reduction, although some hairs may grow back slowly over time requiring touch-up treatments about every 1-2 years.

What should I know before treatment?

Laser hair removal is generally a “no downtime” procedure, although there is some preparation before your visit. Because the laser sees pigment, hair should not be waxed or tweezed at least 4-6 weeks before your appointment. If hair has been pulled from the follicle, then there is nothing for the laser to target. Shaving and hair removal creams are preferred grooming practices prior to laser hair removal. We ask that you come to your visit shaved in the treatment area to make the visit more efficient. Additionally, it is not safe to perform laser hair removal on tan skin, so make sure to wear your sunscreen before your laser hair removal appointment, and do not have a spray tan or cream tan at least 3 weeks before your appointment.

What is laser treatment like and when will I see results?

In general, laser hair removal is not painful. Some hair removal lasers can produce a sensation of little rubber bands “popping” against the skin, but they have cooling tips which protect the skin and make the treatment more comfortable. If you are having any discomfort, talk to your treatment provider about using a topical numbing cream in sensitive areas prior to laser hair removal. As treatments progress, they become less painful, as there is less hair to treat! Some hairs will fall out immediately after treatment, and some may take 2-3 weeks after treatment to shed.

Rarely, patients may experience little pink inflamed hair follicles after laser hair removal. These go away quickly, and you can talk to your provider about how to speed up their resolution if they occur.

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular laser procedures in the United States. This has resulted in this service being offered at many medical spas and laser centers. However, going to a board-certified dermatologist ensures you receive laser treatment that is safe and effective and tailored to your particular skin color and needs. It is also important to ensure that laser hair removal is right for you, as there are some medical conditions that cause excessive hair growth, and, if undiagnosed, will result in useless treatments and a waste of your time and money. The board-certified dermatologists at Cenla Dermatology have over 25 years of combined experience in performing laser hair removal, as well as experience in correcting problems from poorly performed treatments at unsupervised laser centers. Trust the experts at Cenla Dermatology with all of your skin and unwanted hair needs.
