Sculptra

Sculptra Aesthetic, or Sculptra, is unique filler because it works exclusively by stimulating new collagen growth. Sculptra is not an “instant filler” – the results are seen slowly and naturally after a series of treatments. Sculptra is ideal for men and women seeking a gradual and long-lasting treatment to restore facial volume. Scultpra can correct deeper folds, hollows of the cheeks, and can also restructure jaw lines. It has also become a favorite filler for body volumization and contouring as the stimulatory effect has impact on skin quality and tightening.

Cenla Dermatology offers Sculptra Aesthetic to patients in the central Louisiana area. Our team of board-certified dermatologists uses Sculptra to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve the signs of skin aging. Once your body has made new collagen in response to the Sculptra injections, the results will be beautiful and long lasting.

What can Sculptra treat?

Treating the signs of aging requires a combined or “panfacial” approach since different dermal fillers work best for different concerns. Sculptra works best on the sides or lateral areas of the face to lift the cheeks, to fill the hollows of the temples, and to soften or improve shadowing of a gaunt, flattened cheek. Many patients report a “Sculptra Glow” – which refers to an improvement in skin quality after Scultpra injection because of the stimulation of collagen. Sculptra is now commonly used on the body to increase tightness and improve the appearance of loose or crepey skin of the arms, neck, thighs, and buttocks.

How can Sculptra be used?

How does Sculptra work?

Sculptra Aesthetic is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, which acts as a collagen stimulator. Injection of Sculptra occurs within the deep layers of your skin to add volume and trigger your body’s ability to naturally produce collagen. This technique results in a more youthful fullness and firmness of the skin in a natural and subtle way. Sculptra Aesthetic can be used to add volume to compensate for the loss of facial fat, bone, muscle, and collagen that occurs with age. Sculptra Aesthetic can help soften smile lines, reflate flattened cheeks, and restore a lax jawline without the need for plastic surgery.

Improvement with Sculptra Aesthetic is gradual and typically requires multiple sessions spaced approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart. The total number of vials needed for complete treatment is, on average, one vial per decade of life (example: a patient in their 50s would need 6 vials of Sculptra). We recommend scheduling treatments 6-8 weeks apart until the desired effect is seen. You will be asked to massage the treated skin numerous times for several days after your treatment and this will be demonstrated to you before leaving your appointment. You can return to normal activities the next day after treatment.

We take comfort seriously at Cenla Dermatology and apply topical numbing agents before each procedure. If you require medication to be relaxed, this can be discussed at your consultation. Since Sculptra may be placed deep on the face, there can sometimes be some soreness or discomfort of the temples or jaw for a few days after treatment, particularly when chewing or eating. Most Sculptra injections on the body have minimal discomfort afterwards.

It generally takes about 6 weeks for initial results to appear. Once you have completed your recommended treatment course, the improved look from Sculptra Aesthetic will last for at least 2 to 3 years.

This question must be considered on an individual basis. Because we massage Sculptra, we would not want to massage or move Botox that was placed in the same area as it could have potential side effects. However, it is safe to perform Botox and Sculptra at the same time on different areas on the body. Each product works differently in the skin, and Botox and Sculptra can be a powerful combination to achieve beautiful, natural-looking rejuvenation.

Side effects of Sculptra, as with all dermal fillers, are typically mild. There can be temporary redness and swelling at injection sites. Bruising can happen and is more common on body locations due to the depth of injection. If bruising occurs, we offer complimentary treatment with the Excel V laser, which can decrease the duration of the bruise by 66%. Like all dermal fillers, Sculptra may rarely cause lumps or bumps beneath the skin. If these side effects occur, please contact our office immediately so that we may minimize and treat the side effect.

Dermal fillers are generally safe, but as with any treatment, there are potential side effects. The risks include (but are not limited to): swelling, firmness, lumps, pain, redness, bruising, itching, and vascular compromise. This occurs in less than 1% of patients in our practice.  Sculptra is a safe and effective dermal filler, whose risks of injection are similar to other types of dermal fillers. Talk to your doctor about any medications you are taking as these can increase the risk of bleeding or infection. The use of dermal fillers is especially safe when you choose a board certified dermatologist with extensive training like our doctors at Cenla Dermatology.

For many people who want to enhance their skin, the thought of painful surgery or costly procedures deters them from moving forward with treatment.  Sculptra is a gradual, natural, and safe alternative to plastic surgery. It may not be the answer for everyone so our physicians at Cenla Dermatology will discuss Sculptra and other available treatment options with you at your cosmetic consultation.
